# Browsing Lists

Open **Lists** from the main navigation. Viewing lists needs the lists view permission. Creating, editing and deleting them needs the lists manage permission.

### View modes

The Lists page renders as a **table**, the default, or as **cards**. Pick either from the view-mode control in the toolbar. Your device remembers the choice.

The table shows, per list:

| Column | Shows |
| -------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Name** | The list's emoji and name, with its description underneath |
| **Parent** | What the list holds: **People**, or the stack its records come from |
| **Tags** | The list's tags, the first few inline and the rest behind an overflow popover |
| **Updated by** | Who last changed the list, and when |

### Searching, sorting and tags

* **Search** matches list names and descriptions.
* **Sort** by name, last updated or created date, ascending or descending.
* **Tag filter** narrows the page. Pick one or more tags, and a list must carry **all** of them to match.
* A **Recent lists** banner surfaces the lists you opened lately, for a one-click return.

Assign tags straight from the Tags column popover on each row. The tag library itself, meaning creating, renaming and deleting tags, lives in **Settings → List Tags**. See [List Settings](/docs/your-data/lists/list-settings.md#list-tags).

### Creating a list

Click **New list**:

* **Name** *(required)*, unique among your lists.
* **Emoji** *(required)*, the list's icon, defaulting to 🗂️.
* **Description** *(optional)*.
* **Parent type** *(required, permanent)*, either **People** or **Stack**. Choosing Stack reveals a picker for the stack whose records the list will hold.

> **Parent type is fixed once created.** A people list never becomes a record list, and a record list never switches stacks. Need the other kind? Create a new list.

Creating the list drops you straight into it, ready to set up its first view. See [Working with List Items](/docs/your-data/lists/working-with-list-items.md).

### Editing and deleting

Each row and card carries a menu with four options. **View** opens the list. **Settings** opens its structure page in Settings. **Update** renames it and changes its emoji or description, with parent type shown read-only. **Delete** removes it after a confirmation.

Deleting a list removes the list and its memberships. The people and records themselves stay untouched.
