# Lists

A **list** is a named, curated collection. It holds **people**, or **records from one stack**.

A [segment](/docs/your-data/segments.md) is a live query that people move through on their own. A [label](/docs/your-data/labels.md) marks people. A list keeps an **explicit membership**: items sit in the list because someone or something put them there, and they stay until removed.

Every list carries a **parent type**, chosen at creation and fixed afterwards. It is a people list, or a record list bound to one stack. No list mixes the two.

Members join a list three ways: added **manually**, matched by the list's **membership rules**, or added by an **automation**. Every item remembers how it arrived.

Lists can carry their own **list attributes** too. Those fields belong to the membership itself, such as a priority, a review status or a note, and sit apart from the person's or record's own data.
