# Managing Labels

### Creating a Label

Click **New Label** on the Labels page, or the "New Label" button at the bottom of a Kanban column. A form opens with:

* **Name**, the label's display name. Required, up to 254 characters, and unique inside the selected category.
* **Category**, the category the label belongs to. Required. Pick one from the dropdown, or click **New Category** to create one inline.

Turn on **Create more** in the footer to keep the form open after saving and create several labels in a row. The category stays selected between them.

***

### Creating a Category

Categories group related labels. Three places create one:

1. The **+** button at the top of the category sidebar
2. The **New Category** link inside the label creation form
3. The **New Category** option in the category dropdown on the Settings tab

The category form has three required fields:

* **Name**, the category's display name, up to 255 characters
* **Emoji**, a visual identifier beside the name
* **Colour**, a hex colour for tags and visual indicators

***

### Editing a Label

Three routes edit a label:

* **From the list**, through the three-dot menu on a table row or Kanban card, then **Update**
* **From the detail page**, by clicking the label name in the header to rename it inline
* **From the Settings tab**, by changing the name or category and clicking **Save Changes**

***

### Editing a Category

* **From the sidebar**, through the three-dot menu next to any category, then **Update**
* **From Kanban view**, by hovering over a column header and clicking the gear icon

Both open the same form, filled with the category's current name, emoji and colour.

***

### Deleting a Label

Click the three-dot menu in the list and choose **Delete**. The label's Settings tab offers the same through **Delete Label Permanently** in the Danger Zone.

A confirmation dialog spells out the consequences:

* The label leaves every person who holds it.
* Automations linked to this label get paused.
* Delayed events inside those automations get removed.

***

### Deleting a Category

Click the three-dot menu next to a category in the sidebar and choose **Delete**. The category leaves the system.

{% hint style="warning" %}
**Warning:** deleting a category removes every label inside it.
{% endhint %}

### Assigning Labels to People

You assign labels from the People section of the app:

* **From a person's detail page**, click **Assign Label** in the header, or open the Labels tab to manage every label on them.
* **In bulk**, select people on the People list, then choose **Assign Label** or **Remove Label** from the batch action bar.

Pick a label from the dropdown as you assign. **New Label** creates one inline, with no trip away from the assignment form.

***

### Removing Labels from People

Open a person's Labels tab and click the remove button next to any label. A confirmation dialog warns you that removing a label can fire automations set up to respond to label removal.

Bulk removal works from the People list through the batch action bar.

***

### Reassigning Labels Between Categories

In Kanban view, drag a label card from one category column to another. Flapjax updates the label's category as you drop it.

***

### Label Preview

Some views offer a quick look at a label's analytics without leaving the page. The preview shows:

* **Lifetime statistics**: Total People, Peak Count, Retention Rate, Peak Day and Average Time Spent
* **Time-based statistics**: the same metrics inside a date range, beside a chart of people entering and leaving the label over time
