# Campaigns

Campaigns label your outbound messages so you can group, attribute and report on them later. An automation sends an email or SMS, and you tag that send with a campaign and a group. Those tags travel to the Communications page, where you filter your sendout history by campaign.

Campaigns organise and report on sends. They never change who receives a message or what it says.

***

### The two-level structure

Campaigns work at two levels.

* A **Campaign** sits at the top. Think of a marketing initiative such as "Summer Promo" or "Welcome Series".
* A **Group** subdivides a campaign into stages or variations, such as "Reminder" and "Last Chance" inside "Summer Promo".

Every group belongs to exactly one campaign. Tagging a send means choosing a **campaign and group pair**. You pick the campaign first, then the group inside it.

***

### Why tag your sends

Tags give you attribution and reporting. Emails and SMS messages carrying campaign tags let you:

* Filter the [Communications page](/docs/reporting/communications.md) by campaign, and by group if you want, to see the sends behind one initiative.
* Keep a clean history of what went out under which campaign.

***

### Creating a campaign

1. Go to **Settings → Campaigns**.
2. Click **New Campaign** in the top-right corner.
3. Fill in the form:
   * **Emoji**, a visual marker for the campaign, defaulting to 📣. Optional.
   * **Name**, required. Up to 255 characters, and unique, so no two campaigns share one.
   * **Description**, optional free text.
4. Click **Save**.

To edit a campaign, open its three-dot menu on the list and choose **Edit**, or open the campaign and use its **Settings** tab.

{% hint style="info" %}
The campaigns list does not update live. A teammate who creates or changes a campaign in another tab stays invisible to you until you refresh.
{% endhint %}

***

### Creating groups

Groups live inside a campaign.

1. Open a campaign from the list.
2. On the **Groups** tab, click **New Group**.
3. Enter a **Name**, required, up to 255 characters, unique inside that campaign.
4. Click **Save**.

Edit or delete a group from its three-dot menu on the Groups tab. A group becomes selectable everywhere you tag a send as soon as it exists.

***

### How tagging a send works

You tag a send as you build an automation, in the send action's configuration. A campaign picker sits there.

* The picker appears only if your organisation has at least one campaign.
* Choosing a campaign is optional.
* Pick a campaign and choosing a **group** turns required. A campaign tag always carries a group, and Flapjax refuses to save a send that has a campaign with no group.

The builder enforces that pairing up front, so every saved tag is a valid campaign-and-group pair.

***

### Which sends can be tagged

Campaign tagging covers **email and SMS sends only**.

Slack, Microsoft Teams, Telegram and push notifications carry no campaign tags, and the campaign picker stays hidden as you configure those sends.

***

### What happens to an invalid tag at send time

Delete a campaign or group after a send was configured to use it and the tag turns invalid. The send then runs, Flapjax **drops the invalid tag and delivers the message anyway**. A stale campaign tag never blocks or fails a send. The message goes out untagged.

***

### Deleting a campaign or group

* **Delete a group** from its three-dot menu on the Groups tab.
* **Delete a campaign** from the three-dot menu on the campaigns list, or from the **Danger zone** on the campaign's Settings tab. Deleting a campaign removes its groups too.

Neither deletion disturbs messages already sent. An automation still configured with the deleted tag keeps sending, and Flapjax drops the stale tag at send time as described above.
